This show is special because it is the first Beautiful Places show that I filmed. I got my new Panasonic HVX200 camera and went to Yosemite with it. I hiked up Yosemite Falls and filmed the whole trip. If you compare the shots from this show to some of my later shows, you can (I hope) see a big difference in the quality. The later shows were shot with a Sony EX1, but even with the HVX, my knowledge of the camera grew show by show as I learned how to use it.
My biggest piece of advice to any film maker is learn how to shoot MANUAL EVERYTHING! You don’t want the camera making any of your choices. Put your camera on manual and learn how to get good shots. Don’t be fooled by easy and automatic, you will pay dearly in mediocre shots. This podcast is full of them.
I intend to go back and do another Yosemite Falls show this Spring when the water is flowing well. Do you have a camera that you know you need to learn more about but you stick with automatic settings? Does the flash work sometimes and not others and it’s beyond your control? I know. I have a new Canon 7D and I’m still struggling with auto focus. It always focuses on the wrong thing!
